    Biography

Daniel Carter is an award-winning creative director, most recently of O’Reilly Media’s Maker Media Division, creators of MAKE magazine, CRAFT magazine, MAKE: Books, makezine.com, craftzine.com, and Maker Faire. For 20 years he’s worked as a designer for companies as diverse as SPY magazine, Wired, Nickelodeon, and Old Navy, among others. Starting his career as an intern at SPY while in college at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., Daniel continued to work as an art director in magazines including Mademoiselle, Nickelodeon, and Wired. Part of the original creative group of Wired, he went on to be the founding design director of The Industry Standard before returning to Wired to lead it into the 21st century. Daniel shifted his interests and worked in books and advertising, first designing books for Mötley Crüe and Dave Navarro, and then working for a few years as the art director of print advertising for Old Navy. After a short stint with Factor Design, creating marketing and tradeshow materials for Apple and Nike, he returned to magazines in 2006 to lead MAKE, launch CRAFT, launch the book division of Maker Media, and oversee the creative direction of the new retail site, Makers Market and the new projects-based site Make: Projects. He has won several design awards, including a Silver Medal from the Society of Publication Designers, a National Magazine Award for design (Wired), and many merit awards for design from SPD, Communication Arts, and the Art Director's Club of New York.

Hello. On this site you'll find a selection of work I've had a hand in, usually as a designer, but also as a creative director leading a team of designers, writers, photographers, and illustrators.

If you'd like to read something sort of official about me, have a look at the "biography" column to the right. It's a bit dry, but the facts are all there for those in need of that sort of thing.

In addition to design, I enjoy illustrating comics, road cycling, and delicious coffee, and I'm always interested in getting hot tips on any of the above.
